The holidays are a time to gather with family and friends, share some favorite memories and create new ones. Chances are you’ll be traveling to and from parties or holiday visits, decorating the house and filling it with gifts. Here are some tips to make sure that you and your loved ones have a safe holiday season.

In the car

Make sure your car is in good working order for winter driving. Check your tires, your windshield wipers and your emergency road kit to make sure you’re prepared before hitting the road. If you’re headed to a party, choose a designated driver ahead of time. If you’re hosting a party, provide nonalcoholic drinks for guests who are driving. And don’t forget to buckle up - it’s the easiest way to prevent injury in a car accident.

At home

If you’re decorating your home for the holidays, take some common-sense precautions. Use only noncombustible or flame-resistant materials, and keep candles away from decorations (and wrapping paper). If you use candles during a party, place them where they cannot be knocked over.

Artificial and live trees can both be good choices, if you keep a few safety tips in mind. When buying an artificial tree, check the label to make sure it is fire resistant. If choosing a live tree, look for one that is freshly cut - it will stay green longer and be less of a fire hazard than a dry tree. All trees should be situated away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources.

When decorating with lights, check for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections. Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house, walls or other firm support, using no more than three standard-size sets of lights per extension cord. Be sure to turn off outdoor lights and tree lights at night and when you’re gone.

A roaring fire in the fireplace seems appropriate for the holidays. Just don’t throw any wrapping paper on the fire - it can ignite suddenly and burn intensely, causing a flash fire.

If you live in a northern climate, keep your sidewalks and driveway free of ice and snow. Winter weather can make for treacherous walking if you don’t shovel as needed. Slips and falls on the ice can result in much more than a bruised ego.

Gifts

If you’ve purchased any expensive gifts this year, don’t forget to add them to your homeowners insurance policy. Call your insurance agent if you’ve bought items such as a big screen television, a computer or jewelry to see if it is covered under your policy or if you need a special rider.

Also, be aware that the holidays are high crime times. Thiefs know that homes are full of presents waiting to be opened, so take extra precautions. If you have a home alarm system, be sure to use it at night and when you’re away from home. If you are traveling during the holidays, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your house.

Follow these simple guidelines to keep your holidays and your home safe.
