Waxing your car on a regular basis can make a big difference in how your car looks and how it holds up against the wear and tear of the sun's rays and other environmental conditions.
What Does Wax Do For a Car's Finish?

Waxing your car regularly helps to keep it looking new and preserve its value.

- Wax restores a car's shine by filling in tiny scratches in the car's paint.

- Wax adds a protective layer against environmental damage.

- Even cars with a layer of clear coat benefit, as clear coat is just another layer of paint that will crack and fade over time.

In the summer, wax helps protect paint from UV radiation, which means less fading and cracking. In the winter, it helps protect against rain, sleet, snow and road debris that can weaken paint and cause it to chip and crack.

How Wax Protects and Shines

- The surface of any car's paint consists of small hills, valleys, and even jagged crevices. By rubbing wax on the paint surface the wax flows into the valleys and micro-scratches, filling the low spots and even covering the hills.

- As ingredients harden and cure they stay on the car. A product such as Armor All Wax contains a special ingredient that bonds to the paint surface, providing a durable barrier to protect the car.

Armor All's research and development lab conducted extensive product tests to assess the performance of its car wax. Using computerized light-sensitive meters to measure color enhancement and gloss, Armor All's formula delivers a bright, high gloss shine.

- The more durable the wax, the better protection from harmful elements.

Choose a car wax that has been rigorously tested for toughness and durability. Armor All, for example, uses special precision instruments (i.e., scrub-testing machine that simulates car washings) to measure the endurance of their car wax.

- As the wax fills in and levels imperfections, the resulting smoother surface minimizes the suns rays scattering and makes the car shine.

How to Apply Wax

- Apply wax only to a clean car. Any dirt that is on the car or the rag actually can cause scratches to the paint. Wash it well with a foaming car wash, then dry with a clean towel.

- Wax your car in the shade. Applying the wax to a cooler surface will allow you to smooth it more uniformly than a car that has been standing in the sun. Hot surfaces will cause the wax to dry almost upon contact, making it hard to spread.

- Use a clean, dry soft cloth to apply wax. Put a little wax on the cloth and gently rub in a circular motion. Do a small section at a time, wiping off the wax with a clean, dry cloth before moving on to the next section.

- Cover all paint surfaces; however, try not to coat the moldings and bumper, as the wax can leave a white residue on those surfaces that can be difficult to remove.

How Often Should a Car Be Waxed?

- Typically every two months.

- More often if car paint is routinely exposed to tough weather and road conditions.

What are the Benefits of Regular Car Waxing?

- The most immediate is how great your car looks. Producing and maintaining a brilliant shine on your car's finish is probably the most tangible difference you can make in your car's appearance.

- The longer-term payoff is added protection. Regular waxing keeps your car looking new longer and helps avoid a costly new paint job that can run up to $3,000.

Waxing your car is a time-honored tradition that is as important now as ever before.
